Paintings
I began these small paintings in 2020. Inspiration for this work came about after a short residency in Cill Rialig, Co. Kerry in 2019. The area is steeped in ancient Irish history and my visit reignited an interest in the neolithic era and portal dolmens in particular. The word portal describes a gateway or entrance to a place; a mysterious, mythical destination. This is a new area of interest and investigation for me and combined with asemic writing remains open-ended. (place pointer on image for more information).
Below are some images from my second solo show "As Crow Flies" in Down Arts Centre, Downpatrick, Northern Ireland in 2018.
My fascination for crows, rooks in particular and Ted Hughes visceral Crow poems are the basis for this work that is emotive and immediate; there are no preparatory drawings, I worked straight onto the surface.. "As a protagonist of a book a crow would become symbolic crow living a legendary life. That is how crow took off.” Hughes created this epic character that was inadequate and flawed questioning a fallible god. I see Crow as a metaphor for humanity.
